During the Korean War 1951, the 38th Parallel was a significant location. There were more than 500 Mig-15s involved in the Korean War, while the United States had 75 North American F-86 Sabre's to combat the formidable Mig-15s. Initially, the F-86 Sabre was outnumbered 2:1 in the Korean War, posing a significant challenge for the brave American pilots. However, by the end of the Korean War, the ratio had shifted to 10:1 in favor of the F-86 Sabres.
Major George A. Davis, Jr. demonstrated exceptional leadership when he took charge of the 334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing in the Korean War in 1951. He fearlessly led his squadron into many air combats over the skies of the 38th parallel with the F-86 Sabre. Whether their mission was to just fly the Sinuiju-Yulu River or Mig Alley, Major George Davis, Jr. always strategized for victory. His leadership led to numerous victories, but they also suffered losses along the way, a testament to the challenges they faced.
Major Davis, Jr. achieved numerous victories. He became the 4th highest Ace of the Korean War and was one of 7 pilots to become an Ace in two wars. During WWII, he flew 266 combat missions, and during the Korean War, he flew 60 missions. Two pilots, a Chinese pilot named Zhang Jihui and a Soviet pilot named Mikhail Averin, both claimed the kill shot on the F-86 Sabre.
Unfortunately, Major George Davis, Jr. lost his life in Korea during his final mission. He was leading a flight of 4 on a combat aerial control near the Manchurian border when he was surprised by 12 Chinese Mig-15s preparing to attack friendly fighter bombers conducting low-level operations. Despite knowing the odds were against him, he bravely headed into battle, taking out two Mig-15s before being shot down and crashing about 30 miles south of the Sinuiju-Yulu River on February 10, 1952.
